Summer Opportunities!

Hey All!

Just procrastinating from finishing comments by daydreaming online about summer options! I get regular emails from a friend who loved the workshops at the Teach 21 site.

Anyone game for going to the design thinking workshop? --not that I can tell exactly what it is--but the description is intriguing. I am thinking of signing up for the June date, but I'd love company!

here is the link...( happy comment writing!)

Klingenstein Summer Institute

If you are a faculty member in your 2nd-5th year of full-time teaching, please take a moment to explore the link below.  The Klingenstein Summer Institute has proven to be an invaluable experience, and we strongly encourage you to apply if interested.  The application deadline is January 15th, 2013; the 2013 Summer Institute will run from June 19 to July 2 on Lawrenceville's campus.

From their website:
Dedicated to affirming beginning teachers and encouraging their continued growth, the Klingenstein Summer Institute gathers 75 teachers from around the world for an exploration of teaching styles, educational philosophies, educational issues and personal development. Meeting for two weeks in late June, the Institute challenges these participants to embrace the complexities of the classroom and to explore the art of teaching and the delicate balance of subject mastery, judgment, intuition and creativity.
This intensive program offered in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is especially designed to make teachers more effective leaders in the classroom and throughout the school. Participants come together in a variety of workshops, seminars, and collaborative exercises, and are guided by prominent education experts, talented Teachers College professors, and master teachers. Participants also attend a theater production in New York City and explore the neighboring town of Princeton.
The Klingenstein Summer Institute offers a full fellowship, including tuition for four graduate credits, as well as room and board. In addition to the high caliber of the academic program, meals prepared by prominent chefs are a highlight of the Institute.

Exeter Humanities Institute

June 23 - June 28, 2013

A Conference for Teachers

The Exeter Humanities Institute is a five-day working conference primarily for secondary school English and History teachers. It is designed to explore the use of student-centered, discussion-based education that is loosely described as the Harkness pedagogy. Morning sessions will utilize essays on a common humanities topic to explore issues in leading discussions. Afternoons are spent in focus groups or in the Academy library doing research on teaching materials for participants to use in their home schools. The selection of a core topic is intended to provide common content in the humanities as well as a focus for class discussions. The topics are broadly defined to encourage interdisciplinary exchanges.
As I mentioned in the opening faculty meetings, I found this to be an incredibly worthwhile experience.  You meet a great group of engaged educators from all over the country/world, and the conference is structured in a way to give you plenty of time to read/think/explore the beautiful surrounding countryside (if there aren't continuous thunderstorms like my week there!).
You MUST sign-up almost immediately after it is allowed as the conference fills up almost instantaneously.
